Application of methylated-β-cyclodextrin in paint thickeners

Because thickeners can improve the flowability and workability of coatings, enhance thixotropy, and overcome defects such as sagging and sedimentation, they are widely used in the thickening of water-based coatings, adhesives, textile printing and dyeing pastes, inks, and synthetic or natural emulsions.

Methylated-β-cyclodextrin can efficiently adjust the viscosity of the thickener system through the complexation and decomplexation of the hydrophobic groups of the hydrophobic modified thickener, improving the pumpability and filling ability of the thickener, simplifying the production process, and reducing costs. Especially when using methylated-β-cyclodextrin polyurethane thickener for coating thickening, it can improve the thickening efficiency, make the coating more environmentally friendly, and improve its performance.

β-cyclodextrin is effective in controlling the viscosity of low-solid-content thickeners, but its viscosity adjustment is limited for high-solid-content thickeners. Methylated-β-cyclodextrin, however, is a very efficient viscosity inhibitor. For polyurethane thickeners, only 7% methylated-β-cyclodextrin is needed to reduce the viscosity of the system to 2000 mPa·s to meet the requirements of use. Its efficiency is higher than that of 10 ethylene glycols.

Methylated-β-cyclodextrin can maintain the stability of the coloring dispersant and can take effect without adding other components or dispersants. It can also improve the compatibility of incompatible surfactants, overcome unfavorable water sensitivity and foaming. Moreover, it improves the compatibility of colorants without the need for additional surfactants.

The advantages of using methylated-β-cyclodextrin in thickeners are: (1) It eliminates the need for organic solvents, meeting environmental requirements. (2) It can improve thickening efficiency. (3) It increases the compatibility of the thickener in the coating system and reduces the binding time. (4) It improves the compatibility of colorants in coatings. (5) It improves the water resistance of coatings and reduces foaming. In addition to the above advantages, methylated-β-cyclodextrin has no adverse effects on the flowability, sagging, leveling, gloss, color stability, and thermal aging stability of coatings. Therefore, the application of methylated-β-cyclodextrin in thickeners is a good product worthy of promotion.
