For a particular cyclodextrin, the extent to which changing the solution ionic strength affects the inclusion varies depending on the drug molecule: the ability of hydrocortisone and prazosin to form inclusion complexes with both hydroxypropylbeta-cyclodextrin and sulfobutyl ether betacyclodextrin sodium salts did not change significantly with ionic strength; the formation of farfaradin inclusion complexes all increased with ionic strength, and the two cyclodextrin inclusion complexes had the same degree of increase; the extent of the effect of ionic strength on the ability of naproxen to form the two cyclodextrin inclusion complexes was not consistent, the ability of naproxen to form inclusion complexes with the sodium salt of sulfobutyl ether betacyclodextrin increased with the increase in ionic strength, while the formation of inclusion complexes with hydroxypropyl betacyclodextrin was little affected by ionic strength.
